Description

The Londesborough Arms Hotel is a mid-18th century house, now operating as a hotel. It is constructed of orange brick with ashlar dressings, a timber eaves cornice, and a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and consists of five bays arranged as 2:1:2, with the central three bays projecting forward. A plinth runs along the base. A Tuscan porch provides access to the front door, which is composed of six raised and fielded panels, and features an overlight within a pilastered doorcase, with panelled reveals and a soffit beneath a blank round arch. The windows on the left side are round-headed sashes with radial glazing, while those on the right are round-headed sashes with glazing bars, all set within gauged brick arches. Round-arched recesses with impost bands are located in the outer bays. A coat of arms belonging to the Londesborough family is displayed in a square panel with volutes and cornice, supported on brackets, above the central bay. The first-floor windows have glazing bars and sills beneath flat gauged brick arches. A second-floor band separates the first and second floors. The second floor has six-pane sashes with sills under flat gauged brick arches. A modillioned eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and axial stacks rise through the roof, which is hipped. The interior retains many original features, including a mid-18th century staircase with scrolled treadends, turned balusters, and a ramped and wreathed moulded handrail.
