Description
The Coach House and Stables at Melton Hill is a late 18th-century building with a late 19th-century extension that creates a courtyard at the rear. It is constructed of brick and has a colour-washed finish with a graduated slate roof. The main section features a central two-storey, single-bay block, flanked by lower three-bay ranges on either side that are slightly recessed. The central block includes a carriage entrance with an elliptical arch, an impost band, and a boarded taking-in door, along with an eaves band and oversailing eaves leading to a pediment. Each of the side ranges has three round-headed blank arches, each containing a four-pane window with a lower linking light. The building has a hipped roof. Inside, the carriageway passes under a rendered brick groin vault supported by three bays on brick pilasters with caps. There are boarded double stable doors at the end bays of the carriageway on both sides. The rear elevation mirrors the central bay but includes flanking lean-to bays. The late 19th-century additions are of no special interest. This building was previously the coach house for Melton Hill, which has since been demolished.
