Description

A house dating from approximately 1760 to 1770, built for Sir Henry Etherington of Hull. The house is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and has a slate roof. The main front has three storeys and five bays, with the central bay projecting slightly beneath a pediment. It features a moulded plinth and rusticated quoins. The central entrance has a panelled and glazed door with a fanlight, set within a tripartite Corinthian portal flanked by side lights with glazing bars. The portal breaks forward on Corinthian columns, with a frieze featuring a central urn and festoons, a dentilled cornice, and a dentilled segmental pediment. The windows on the main front are sash windows with glazing bars, set within moulded architraves and sill bands. A first-floor band and sill band are present. A sash window above the door has an eared architrave with chambrans under a dentilled floating cornice, and a sunk balustraded panel beneath it. The second floor has five six-pane sash windows in moulded architraves with sills. Moulded eaves and raked cornices are present, topped by a coped parapet. A blank shield enriched with foliage over crossed horns and a riband is set within the pediment. The garden front is three storeys high, with seven bays; bays four to six rise as a canted bay through the full height of the house. The ground floor of the canted bay features two-pane sashes with sills, while elsewhere there are sashes with glazing bars. All windows are under slightly cambered gauged brick arches with projecting keyblocks. A first-floor band is present. The first floor has seven similar windows, and the second floor has seven six-pane sash windows with sills, all under slightly cambered gauged brick arches with raised keyblocks. A mutule cornice is present, topped by a coped parapet and hipped roofs. The interior is largely complete and of exceptional quality, featuring a cut-string staircase with patterned tread ends, fluted balusters, and a moulded handrail. Most of the six-panelled doors remain, hung in enriched architraves with ornate overdoors in the Adam style. Principal rooms retain elaborate fireplaces in polychrome marble. The plasterwork is plentiful and of excellent quality, with elaborate treatment to the stair soffit and ceilings of the principal rooms, which are also panelled.
