Description
The North Ferriby War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is situated at the junction of Ferriby High Road and Church Road, directly opposite the Ferriby Hall Club with Screen Wall and Gate Piers, which is also listed as Grade II. The memorial is set in a gravelled area that is separated from the road by posts and a chain.
It features a tall cross made of Portland stone that rises from a tapering plinth and has a three-stepped base. A reversed sword is carved in relief on the cross, and the inscriptions on the plinth are incised and painted black. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads “LEST WE FORGET” followed by “IN MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THIS VILLAGE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 1939 – 1945.” The names of those who served in the First World War are listed on either side of the plinth, while the names from the Second World War are found at the rear.
Additionally, to the right of the memorial cross, in front of a flagpole, there is a small headstone that reads “1939 – 1945 IN HONOUR AND MEMORY OF THE VALIANT NFPC 1995.” However, these additional features are not considered of special interest.
