Description
This is a terrace of four houses located at 3-9 Bridge Street, Bebington, built in 1894 as part of the Port Sunlight model village. Designed by Douglas and Fordham, the houses are constructed of brick with terracotta detailing and a tile roof. The terrace is two storeys high and comprises six bays, with the end bays projecting at an angle and featuring canted designs, hipped roofs and finials. The central bays feature a canopy to the ground floor and shaped gables with ball finials.
The ground floor windows are double-chamfered mullioned with ogival (pointed) heads; the end bays have eight-light windows, while the central bays have five-light canted bays. The first floor has six-light windows at the ends, and the other bays feature three-light windows with shaped heads, tympana (triangular spaces above the windows) containing blind tracery, and blind roundels decorating the central pairs of windows. The entrances have decorated lintels and doors with vertical strips and three leaded lights, framed by ogee-headed lights.
The terrace has two stacks of chimneys running across its length, and additional projecting gable-end stacks. The returns (side elevations) exhibit diapering (decorative brick patterns) and tile-hung gables. Dated rainwater heads are also present.
