Description

The Lyceum is a church and school building, dating to 1896, designed by Douglas and Fordham as part of the Port Sunlight model village. It is now used as a social centre. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, with slate roofs featuring tile ridges. The main facade presents five gabled bays, with all but the first having shaped gables. It has a stone moulded base, flush bands, diapering and quoins. The windows have elliptical-headed lights with leaded glazing. The first bay projects with a three-light window. The second bay contains three windows of two lights with transoms and hood moulds. The third bay is recessed and features paired two-light windows with decorative heads and transoms. A projecting ground floor to the third and fifth bays has a ramped parapet and three-light windows. The fifth bay contains three windows of two lights with transoms and traceried heads. An end turret has a square ground floor and octagonal top with broaches, a ramped parapet with ball finials, and a recessed slate spire. Clock faces are interspersed with square-headed traceried lights. The main entrance features a porch with pilasters and a panel in the gable, above an elliptical-headed opening. Entrances to the first bay and to the return of the fifth bay have elliptical heads and three overlights. The left return has six bays, with the first, second and fourth, and fifth bays projecting under shaped gables, each containing paired cross-mullioned windows with elliptical tympana. There are recessed elliptical-headed entrances. Some gabled roof dormers are present, along with three twisted chimney stacks. A sign post bears a painted board with band lettering reading "LYCEUM”. The right return and rear elevations are similar in style.
