Description

This is a terrace of sixteen houses, forming the north-west range of Hamilton Square. The terrace was built between 1839 and 1844 by James Gillespie Graham. It is constructed with ashlar facing brick and has Welsh slate roofs. The houses are three storeys high with an attic and basement. Each house has a three-window front, arranged around a wide entrance hall and a double-depth single room, with a staircase between the two rooms. The terrace is symmetrically designed, with projecting end pavilions and a stepped central section of four bays. The basement storey is rusticated throughout. The end pavilions are emphasised with arched windows flanking porches featuring Doric columns. The pavilions and central bays are further stressed with a giant order of attached Doric columns and an entablature. Other houses have four-panelled doors set within emphasised architraves and 12-pane sash windows with stressed voussoirs to the ground floor. Upper windows are all 12-pane sashes, with cast-iron acanthus balconies to the first floor, and entablatures used to highlight the central bays. Spear-head railings run along the basement area, and sphinx boot scrapers are on the steps. The return elevations to Cleveland Street and Price Street are three bays wide, featuring a central door within an architrave with engaged Doric shafts. Large axial stacks are present. This terrace is part of the Hamilton Square development, an important example of formal town planning initiated by John Laird in 1825. Numbers 23 and 24 were separately listed on 24th August 1970.
