Description
The terrace at 3-19 Adelaide Terrace, Crosby, was likely constructed around 1847-50, with building occurring in phases, as evidenced by the Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1847 which only shows numbers 17, 18, and 19. The terrace has undergone alterations since its original construction.
The buildings are rendered in painted stucco with slate roofs. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, most houses presenting a single facade, although numbers 13 and 16 have double facades and a rear extension. The terrace is two storeys and attics high, with numbers 10 and 11 having a full attic storey. Each house has three windows, except numbers 13 and 16, which have four.
Architectural details include a prominent plinth, giant Doric pilasters separating the houses (with matching pilasters at the attic level of numbers 10 and 11), a string course, a moulded sill band, a frieze with a string course, and a moulded cornice, which is interrupted between numbers 3 and 4 and at numbers 17 to 19, where number 18 also features a pediment. Doorways are square-headed with panelled doors (except at number 12, which has a plain door) and overlights. The overlights are plain, except for those at numbers 13, 14, and 16, which have margin panes. Most ground-floor windows have sunk-panel aprons; numbers 8’s windows incorporate ornamental canopies. Almost all windows are sash windows without glazing bars, although numbers 9, 12, 14, and 15 have margin panes. The ground floor windows at numbers 3 and 15 are now top-hung casements designed to resemble sash windows. Number 18 has a square window within its pediment, now fitted with a 20th-century tilting casement. Dormers have been added to numbers 3 to 8 and 12, while the others have skylights. Corniced chimneys are positioned on the front slope.
The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace forms a visual grouping with numbers 2 and 1 to the right, and, together with buildings in Bath Street, Beach Lawn, Marine Crescent, and Marine Terrace, constitutes a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
