Description

A pair of houses, numbers 1 and 2 Beach Lawn, were built in the mid to later 19th century as part of a terrace of 15 houses, designed to create a varied but harmonious appearance. The houses are now altered and number 1 is divided into multiple occupancies. They are constructed of white-painted stucco with slate roofs and stuccoed chimneys. The architectural style is eclectic with Italianate influences.

The houses form an L-shape with extensions to the rear. They have two-and-a-half storeys and two windows plus one to number 1, which is designed as a taller, gabled wing that recesses slightly. Notable features include prominent bracketed eaves and gable verges. An elaborate cast-iron verandah spans three plus three unequal bays, featuring slender pierced columns, lacy openwork segmental arches with scrolls and foliage, and trefoil cresting. The cresting on number 1 was damaged at the time of the survey, with one column and a section of the openwork arch lost.

The ground floor of number 1 features a bowed four-light sash window. Number 2 has a square-headed doorway with a half-glazed panelled door, a plain overlight, and a rectangular bay window of three sashed lights. The first floor of number 1 contains a three-light sash window with shouldered lights, colonnette mullions with foliated caps, and a triple-arched hoodmould. The second floor has a pair of similar sash windows, each with a pitched canopy. Number 2’s first floor has two one-light sash windows with set-in colonnettes and round-headed arches with linked hoodmoulds. All windows are sash without glazing bars. The right-hand return of number 1, facing Blucher Street, has a three-window range in a similar style, including a doorway with a stilted segmental arch in a pitched canopy.

The interiors have not been inspected. Numbers 1 and 2, together with the other listed buildings in Beach Lawn, as well as those in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Marine Crescent and Marine Terrace, form a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
