Description

This is a house, likely dating to the 1860s or 1880s, and altered since its original construction. It is built of painted brick with some painted stone dressings, and has a slate roof. The architectural style is Free Gothic. The house has a double-depth, single-fronted plan with a rear extension, and its windows are arranged in a 1:1 pattern. The main portion of the front elevation has a canted bay window at ground level, topped with a parapet featuring Tudor-arched pseudo machicolation. A Tudor-arched three-light casement window is located on the first floor, and the second floor is slightly set back, with corner pinnacles. A gable half-dormer, which has offsets, a coped gable with a finial, and a round-headed window, is also present. To the right of the main portion is a narrow, set-back bay resembling a turret. This turret has a segmental-pointed doorway on the ground floor, a small Tudor-arched window on the first floor, and a splayed top floor with two small one-light windows and a machicolated parapet. The interior of the house has not been inspected. The house is paired with number 17, and together they represent a pair of small houses in a fanciful Gothic style, creating an interesting contrast with the larger Italianate houses to the right. All listed buildings on Beach Lawn, along with those in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Marine Crescent and Marine Terrace, form a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
