Description

St Edmunds Roman Catholic Manse, located at No. 62 on Oxford Road, is a house that now serves as a Roman Catholic manse. It likely dates from the late 18th century to the early to mid-19th century and has undergone alterations. The exterior features pebble-dashed render with painted stone dressings and a stuccoed wing, topped with slate roofs and a glazed conservatory.

The building has an irregular plan formed by a double-pile main range that runs parallel to the street, under a two-span roof. There is a projecting wing to the right and a square two-storey porch at the angle, along with various additions to the rear and a conservatory attached to the left end.

The manse is two storeys high and has a window arrangement of 1:3:1:2, with a first-floor sill band. The porch showcases a Classical-style pedimented doorway flanked by fluted pilasters, a frieze with triglyphs and metopes, a dentilled segmental pediment, a panelled reveal, and a recessed panelled door with a glazed top panel. An oculus is present at the first floor, along with a moulded cornice and blocking course.

To the left, the main range features a large two-storey canted bay window with Edwardian sashes, which have glazing bars only in the upper leaves, and a moulded cornice. At the ground floor, there is a keyed oculus and two French windows with altered glazing, while the first floor has sashes with 12, 4, and 4 panes. The gable of the wing displays blank arcading at the ground floor, with two wide elliptical arches containing 4-pane sashes alternating with narrow blank arches. The first floor has two similar 4-pane sashes and an open pedimental gable. All windows, except the oculi, feature delicate blind-hoods in their heads. There is a ridge chimney at the junction and a gable chimney to the left.

The conservatory on the left measures five by four bays and has a half-hipped roof. It includes windows with glazing bars, top-hung overlights with stained glass, a doorway at the west end, and roof finials at both ends of the ridge. The interior has not been inspected.
