Description
No. 1 Churchgate is a house that was converted into a shop, likely around 1800, and has been altered since then. It is constructed of white painted brick and has an old slate roof, featuring a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the lane.
The exterior is a single storey with one window on the long side and another in the east gable. The north side includes a square-headed doorway offset to the left and a square three-light window to the right. The east gable boasts a large projected three-light bow window with moulded wooden mullions, 6/9 outer sashes, and a fixed 20-pane center window. It also has a plain frieze and a moulded cornice, along with a tall one-flue ridge chimney. The west gable used to have a window similar to the one on the east but now features a casement.
The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with Nos 3 and 5 Churchgate, located approximately 20 meters to the southwest, as well as with No. 27 Botanic Road and Nos 29-31A Botanic Road to the east and northeast, respectively.
