Description
The Church of St. James, built between 1845 and 1846 by E. Welch, with the chancel added in 1879 by W. and J. Hay, features a west tower, a five-bay nave, transepts, and a chancel flanked by a chapel and a vestry. The three-stage tower has angle buttresses and a west entrance with two orders, a carved tympanum, and a hood mould with head stops. Above this is a gableted roundel, a lancet, and a battered bell stage with paired louvred openings. The tower is adorned with a Lombard frieze and has a pyramidal roof.
To the south, there is a later round baptistry with lancets, a gabled entrance, and a Lombard frieze. The nave contains lancets with shafts and hood moulds featuring head stops, positioned between gabled buttresses. It also has a weathered sill band and a Lombard frieze at the parapet. The transepts are designed with three stepped lancets topped by a roundel, and they have angle buttresses with panelled pinnacles.
The chancel includes one bay of the original structure, followed by the north chapel which features five lancets, a gabled porch, and a two-light east window with rounded details. The east window of the chancel has five lancets, with the central one being taller and flanked by roundels. The south chapel mirrors the north chapel but has a vestry with a canted end, straight-headed windows, and a porch with a rounded entrance. The gabled south porch has two orders, and the roof includes two flat-topped dormers with five cusped lights, also present in the first bay of the chancel. The interior has not been inspected.
