Description

The Church of St. James is a parish church located on Cublington Road in Aston Abbotts. The western tower dates from the late 15th to early 16th century, while the rest of the church was rebuilt between 1865 and 1866 by the architect G.E. Street. The structure is made of rubble stone, with the tower featuring roughly dressed blocks. It has tiled roofs with decorative ridges and stone-coped gables, comprising the tower, nave, south porch, chancel, and vestry.

The tower includes a square stair turret at the southeast corner, diagonal buttresses, a restored battlemented parapet, and a worn plinth. The bell chamber has paired openings on the west and east sides, with single lights on the north and south. The west side also features a door and a three-light traceried window, all with four-centred heads. The remainder of the church is designed in the Decorated style, showcasing traceried windows. The nave has two three-light windows on the north side and three two-light windows on the south side. The south porch is steeply gabled with a two-centred arch. The chancel contains one bay of two-light windows and a three-light window to the east, incorporating some re-set old masonry. A lowside window on the south features a pair of cusped lancets.

Inside, there is a triple chamfered tower arch and a simple chamfered chancel arch. The nave has a 19th-century arch-braced collar and king-post roof. Notable interior features include a restored 15th-century piscina, an octagonal font, and a chest dated 1695, with other fittings from the 19th century.
