Description

The Abbey is a large house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century, and possibly an earlier core. The building is rendered and features hipped slate roofs and brick chimneys. It has a parapet, a band course at the first floor, and irregular lengths of upper band courses and sill courses. The south front has two storeys and consists of 11 bays. The three central bays slightly project and have a dentilled base to the parapet, with barred sash windows on the first floor and round-headed similar sashes in slight arched recesses on the ground floor. An impost band runs between the arches. There are similar arched windows in the bay to the right of the central section, and between the outer left-hand bays, two bays to the left of centre, which have barred sashes flanking French doors, all under a moulded pediment. The remaining bays have barred sashes, with the outer pairs slightly projecting and lower than the central section. The north front is irregular, featuring a front door in a central canted projection and a service wing that projects to the right. At the northern end of the service wing, there is a late 19th-century block with a shaped gable, diaper brick patterns, and a roundel.
