Description
This building, located at 1 Smithdown Road, is a bank constructed in the 1890s, now serving as a surgery. It features a stone exterior with a rusticated granite base and has a flat-iron shape. The structure is three storeys tall with a basement and has two bays on each side of a recessed curved corner bay. There are additional one-storey sections with two bays on Earle Road and one bay on Smithdown Road.
Architectural details include cornices at the ground and first floors, a top entablature with a modillioned cornice, and a blocking course. The ground floor showcases round-headed windows supported by two panelled colonnettes and features small-paned casements in the upper parts. The end bay windows are adorned with architraves and triple keystones, while the first-floor windows have eared architraves and triple keystones. The corner window lacks a keystone and has a frieze beneath a projecting cornice. The second floor has architraved windows with keystones, and the corner window features a triple keystone.
The entrance is framed by a granite surround with an eared architrave and a triple keystone, topped with a cyma frieze and cornice, and flanked by paired Tuscan columns that support the entablature. The first floor has paired Ionic columns, and the second floor features paired Composite columns. At the top, there is a cupola with a round drum, small architraved windows, and a cornice.
