Description

The Church of St Dunstan is a Grade II* listed church built between 1886 and 1889 by architects Aldridge and Deacon. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof. The church has a five-bay nave with aisles and a baptistry, all covered by lean-to roofs, and a two-bay chancel that includes a north chapel and a south organ loft in the transept. At the west end of the nave, there is a fleche with two-light traceried bell-openings and a copper-clad spire. The west end also features a baptistry with a design of 1:3:1 lancets and a parapet.

The north porch has a pointed entrance with a roll-moulded arch and flanking buttresses, while the gable is decorated with a diaper pattern and includes a niche with a figure of St. Dunstan. The south porch provides the entrance on that side. The west window consists of five stepped lancets beneath a pointed relieving arch, with the tympanum depicting Christ and symbols of the Evangelists, flanked by octagonal turrets topped with pyramidal roofs and lucarnes. Each bay of the aisles contains three stepped lancets, and the clerestory features two lancets. The chancel also has three stepped lancets.

Inside, the church has brick walls and five-bay nave arcades supported by stone piers, with a frieze above. There are three arches leading to the baptistry. The roof is an arch-braced king-post design, with the western trusses being more elaborate. The chancel arch is stepped and lacks capitals. An iron screen and frieze with angels' heads can be found, along with a wagon roof. The aisles contain wall memorial brasses, and there is notable 19th-century stained glass, especially in the west window. The overall design is described as severe yet handsome.
