Description
The engine house, built in 1849, is located to the north of the north range of Edge Hill Station and was constructed for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It is made of brick with stone dressings and features three by one bays. The building has a battered stone base with vermiculated rustication, an impost band, a top string course, a bracketed cornice, and a blocking course. The central bay projects forward and includes a round-headed entrance flanked by round-headed windows, all adorned with stone arches featuring vermiculated voussoirs and faceted keys. The windows have small-paned iron casements, and the entrance is fitted with paired six-panel doors. This engine house was specifically built to wind trains through the Waterloo Tunnel.
