Description

The building is a station on the south side of Edge Hill, constructed in 1836 for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It is made of red sandstone and features a hipped slate roof. The structure has two storeys and consists of six bays, with the first three bays set back and the fifth bay protruding. The ground floor exhibits channelled rustication, which is much heavier than that of the first floor, and includes a sill band, a top frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course with a gable over the fifth bay.

The ground floor windows and entrances are set in recessed ashlar reveals with projecting keystones; the windows are sash style, while the entrances have paired four-panel doors. The first floor windows are also sash style and include glazing bars. To the east, there is a one-storey, four-bay extension with a tall brick parapet that houses stairs leading to an underpass. The rear of the building is constructed of yellow brick with a plastered first floor. This station is recognized as one of the oldest railway stations in the world that is still in use.
