Description
The structure consists of two carriage ramps and a tunnel entrance, built in 1836. These ramps extend 100 meters from Tunnel Street to the Edge Hill station buildings and lead to the original tunnel that runs under Tunnel Street to Lime Street Station, which has been opened out and widened. The ramps are made of red sandstone and feature rusticated stonework. They have pierced barrel vaults with round-arched entrances, with 11 entrances on the north side and 9 on the south side. There are also two additional vaults with round-headed windows and entrances, all of which are now fitted with iron grilles. A flat band runs above the entrances. Edge Hill is recognized as one of the oldest railway stations still in use in the world.
