Description

Clare Terrace is a group of eight early 19th-century houses forming a terrace on Marmaduke Street. The buildings are constructed of stucco with slate roofs and each house has three bays. The ground floor is channelled and rusticated, with a sill band marking the first floor, and a top cornice. Houses number 8 and 16 project forwards and have pediments over windows. The first-floor windows are architraved with recessed panels above. Later flat-topped dormers have been added. Most ground-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars; most first-floor windows are casements. The entrances have eared architraves, doorcases with flat pilasters, and complete fanlights. Number 2 has a boarded ground floor, a feature added in 1984. Number 6 lacks pilasters to its doorcase. Number 8 has a boarded ground floor and raised lettering above the first-floor windows that reads ‘CLARE TERRACE’; its first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars. Number 16 has sash windows with glazing bars on its first floor.
