Description
The carriage ramps and steps, built in 1866 for the Liverpool Health Committee, were designed to bridge over the now-demolished Cheshire Lines railway. Constructed from rock-faced stone, the carriage ramps are positioned opposite each other, while the steps also break forward and are opposed, featuring 20th-century iron handrails. The center of the ashlar structure includes a niche with a horse trough and plaques that commemorate its erection and restoration in 1984. On either side, there are small niches that contain dog bowls. The projecting end bays have round arched entrances leading to urinals, which are clad in slate on the lower half of the walls and have slate partitions, along with 20th-century iron gates. The top balustrade is adorned with flanking panels that feature Liver birds and lamp standards, although no lamps are present.
