Description
The retaining wall, railings, and pavement in front of Nos. 1-7 Castle Terrace date from the 19th century. The raised pavement slopes upward from North Street, moving from left to right. The retaining wall is built of rubble stone and features short iron railings. These railings consist of wrought-iron spearhead rails with thinner dog-bars and square standards at intervals, topped with cast-iron anthemion finials, similar to those found on the rails of Gloucester Terrace in Holloway. The wall reaches its highest point in front of No. 1, where there are steps leading down to the road. There are also blocked segmental-headed openings in the retaining walls, which have brick heads, indicating former coal chutes. The terrace is paved with stone.
