Description

The wall and railings on the south side of Abbey Square in Chester date from different periods, with the railings likely from the late 19th century and the wall being older but altered. The structure is made of red sandstone and iron. The plinth of the railings features a weathered design with two steps, while the railings themselves include dogbars and main rods adorned with fleur-de-lys and foliar heads. At the west end, the plinth curves to connect with a battered rock-faced retaining wall that has seven ashlar buttresses leading to the lower yard to the south.
