Description
Abbey Chambers is a detached town house, now used as an office, built in 1754 on what was likely a 40-year lease from the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brown brick and features a grey slate roof.
The exterior consists of a cellar and three storeys, each with three symmetrical windows. Access is via four stone steps leading to a late 19th-century door that has four bolection panels and a central reed, set within a panelled case adorned with fluted pilasters and lion heads at the corners. The door is topped by a frieze with pecked corners and a cornice hood. The windows include recessed sashes with painted stone sills and gauged-brick cambered heads, with two 15-pane windows on the first storey and three on the second storey, while the third storey has three flush sashes, now with four panes each.
A band of one brick course oversails three courses beneath a brick parapet, which has a plain stone coping. The north end features a rendered plinth and a recessed 16-pane sash window on the first and second storeys. The south end has a similar recessed 16-pane sash on the first and second storeys, along with a four-pane flush sash on the third storey. The rear wing on the north side includes an unequal 12-pane flush sash on the third storey. A lead rainwater pipe and head dated 1754 with initials is located on the north end. The gables have coped parapets, and there is a fragment of a likely pre-18th-century wall made of coursed rubble sandstone attached to the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
