Description

Number 10 is a town house built between 1754 and 1760 for Thomas Prescott, located in Abbey Square, Chester. It was constructed on a 40-year lease from the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral. The building features Flemish bond orange brick and a grey slate roof, standing three storeys high with a cellar.

The entrance, located on the west side, has a pair of boot-scrapers and four stone steps leading up to a door with eight fielded panels. Above the door is an overlight consisting of three arched panes, framed by painted stone eared architraves and topped with a pediment on a pulvinated frieze. The first storey has two flush 12-pane sash windows, while the second storey has three similar sash windows. The third storey features three square openings with six-pane windows. All windows have moulded stone sills and wedge lintels with ornate false keystones. A painted stone cornice runs beneath the brick parapet, which has plain stone coping. There is a vertical brick joint connecting Number 10 to Number 11.

The rear windows have been altered, but some likely original flush sashes remain. The interior could not be inspected. Additionally, there is a brick wall at the rear of the garden, which has a sandstone plinth that is probably from before the 18th century, along with a plain stone coping.
