Description
The front garden wall to Bishop's House, including the gate piers and arch, dates from the 18th century, although it likely has an earlier plinth. The structure features sandstone and brown brick in Flemish bond facing Abbey Square, while the brickwork facing Abbey Street is in English garden wall bond and has been partly renewed. The plinth is made of coursed sandstone.
The square gate piers on Abbey Square have plain plinths and fluted capstones with cornices topped by pyramidal stone balls. A wrought-iron pedestrian gate is set within a stone Gothick gateway, which has trefoil-headed panels in the posts and a cusped ogee carving in the lintel, all beneath a coved stone hood facing Abbey Street. The wall has stone coping, and there is a stepped gable to a shed located in the garden at the corner of Abbey Square. The plinth to the east of the gateway on Abbey Street has been re-faced.
