Description

Bishop's House is a Deanery that has been adapted into a residence, likely built in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brown brick and features a Westmorland green slate roof.

The exterior consists of a basement and two storeys, with a symmetrical five-window front. A large flat-roofed vestibule has a stone step leading to replaced double glazed doors with an overlight, set in a painted stone case that includes an architrave, frieze, cornice, and top-hamper. On either side of the vestibule, there are windows with replaced glazing under wedge lintels, and the cornice and parapet are made of one course of painted stone. To the west of the porch, the basement has painted stone walls and replaced small-pane double doors.

On the first storey, there are two tripartite recessed sashes with 4;12;4 panes to the west of the porch, a similar window to the east, and a projecting brick bay featuring a triple sash window at the front and a 12-pane sash in each return. The flat roof has a painted stone cornice. The second storey includes, from west to east, a tripartite 4;12;4 pane sash, a 12-pane sash, a tripartite 4;12;4 pane sash in the central gabled bay above the porch, which has a recessed stone coat-of-arms above the window, and two additional 12-pane sashes.

On the east end, there is a canted brick bay with small-pane basement windows on each oblique side and three recessed 12-pane sashes on each main storey. A projecting rear wing to the west features two arched small-paned basement openings, three flush 12-pane sashes on each upper storey, and a pair of coped gables, along with another wing that has various types of fenestration. The interior has not been inspected.
