Description
Casemates and an attached flight of steps, originally designed for the storage of oil products, were built in 1881. The structure features 60 barrel-vaulted chambers cut into rock, with a concrete facade that was cast in-situ. It has segmental headed entrances with iron doors set between rusticated pilaster strips, topped with a simple cornice. At the right end, there is a dog-legged flight of steps made of coursed sandstone, which includes a rusticated plinth along with ashlar bands and copings. The casemates are particularly notable as an early example of oil storage facilities.
