Description
Toxteth Unitarian Chapel is an Anglican chapel that later became Presbyterian and is now Unitarian. It was originally built in 1618, partly rebuilt in 1774, and had a porch added in 1841. The chapel is constructed of stone with a slate roof and features two storeys and two bays, with an extension to the north. The round-headed windows have stone surrounds with impost blocks. The western extension includes bracketed eaves and a gable, while a smaller projecting bay also features bracketed eaves and a gable. There are paired round-headed entrances with a commemorative plaque and three windows above. The south facade includes a window with a sash and interlaced glazing bars above a small porch. The east windows have external shutters. A small octagonal cupola at the south end has ogee-headed louvred openings and a button finial.
Inside, the chapel has a pulpit against the east wall, box pews, and galleries on three sides. The north and south galleries are from the 17th century, while the connecting gallery is from the 18th century. Two box pews are dated 1650 and 1700. The chancel arch from the original building is chamfered and pointed and has survived. As a chapel that was Nonconformist before 1660 and which retains an excellent set of furnishings completed by a century later, this chapel is of the highest importance.
