Description

The College of Technology and Museum Extension, built between 1896 and 1909 by E. W. Mountford with sculpture by W. Pomeroy, is a three-storey building with a basement. It features a convex facade with seven bays on Byrom Street and nine bays on William Brown Street. The basement, ground, and first floors are rusticated, while the second floor showcases an attached Ionic colonnade, an entablature, and a balustraded parapet. The basement includes lunette windows, and the ground and first floor windows are paired, with Gibbs surrounds on the ground floor and Doric colonnettes on the first floor. The entrance features a round arch and a rusticated aedicule with an open pediment topped by figures, along with a double stair and bronze lamp brackets. The second floor is adorned with tripartite windows that have balustraded balconies and colonnettes topped with entablatures, and the central window has an aedicule with an open pediment. The facade on William Brown Street has projecting end bays with applied rusticated Ionic porticoes on the second floor, featuring figures in the tympana, and niche recesses with aedicules and open pediments also topped by figures. The surrounding windows have architraves, keystones, and entablatures, with balustraded walls and panelled piers. Inside, there is a wall with coupled marble Doric columns, an entrance with panelling and a saucer dome, and two bays with moulded coved ceiling lights depicting nautical scenes. The interior also includes a good fireplace and half-glazed doors with original plates.
