Description
The entrance to the Mersey Tunnel, along with its retaining walls and lodges, was constructed between 1925 and 1934 by Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie, with Herbert J. Rowse as the architect. The structure is made of Portland stone. Originally designed with an axial and symmetrical layout, this has been obscured by later alterations. The lodges, which resemble triumphal arches, are located on either side of the main axis, while the tunnel entrance features a broad segmental arch. Both the retaining walls and the tunnel entrance include some Art Deco ornamentation and sculpture, although much of this is now partly hidden. The lodges are tall and cubic, characterized by fluted buttresses and additional Egyptian Art Deco decoration.
