Description

The retaining wall, gatepiers, and terrace wall surrounding St. John's Gardens were built in 1904 by T. Shelmerdine. Constructed of stone, the wall features a moulded plinth and coping, although the iron railings have been removed. The main wall piers are rusticated and topped with entablatures and block caps, while the intermediate wall piers are battered. There are steps at either end of the wall, and a sunken gentlemen's lavatory in the center retains its original railings along the back wall. The west side includes a main triple entrance with steps, and the north side has two entrances. The terrace wall is characterized by heavily battered piers and balustrades, with a curved recessed center that includes benches and flanking steps.
