Description
Pembroke Buildings is a tall, symmetrical structure featuring three stories and a basement, with a five-bay façade. The building is faced with red brick, complemented by Bath stone dressings and a Portland stone ground floor. It has a bracket cornice and a solid parapet, with cornices on the end stacks. The ends are marked by rusticated pilasters adorned with swagged tablets. The second-floor windows are lugged and feature husk drops, linked by aprons to open segmental pediments on brackets above the keystone architraves of the first-floor windows, which have a wider central surround supported by volute brackets. The windows are fitted with sashes that have small-pane glazing.
Above the ground floor cornice, there is a deep frieze that breaks forward at the center doorpiece. The entrance is framed by a Doric porch with a triglyph frieze that includes a name tablet; it features an arched entrance with a volute keyblock and double three-panel doors, which are traceried. The side windows are arched with cavetto splays and keyblocks.
The building retains good original area railings, complete with a gate leading to the rusticated basement.
At the rear, there is a hipped roof that is partly white tiled and rendered, extending back from the classical frontage on Pier Street. This rear range also has three stories and a five-window brick elevation, featuring a freestone cornice, parapet, and window surrounds with aprons. The central doorway is arched and topped with a curved hood supported by brackets.
