Description
The building is a barn and shippon range, now used as a stable and store, located 20 metres north of Felton's Farmhouse. It likely dates from the late 16th century and was enlarged and altered in the 17th century and later. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. It has a rectangular five-bay plan oriented on an east-west axis, with an added stable at the west end.
This impressive stone range features opposed wagon entrances in the third bay, with some slit breathers to the right. There are four square-headed doorways in the right-hand half and two square loading doors above these. At the left end, there is a square-headed doorway leading to the added stable and a recent buttress at the junction.
The interior contains two full cruck trusses that define the fourth bay. The first truss, which forms the right side of the central threshing area, appears to have been the former west gable end of the building. It has vacant mortices for a former sill and rail, severed tie-beam ends, and a collar and yoke with stave sockets in the soffits. The blades of this truss are weathered on the west face. The second cruck truss features more strongly curved blades, short cruck-ties, a tie-beam with post spurs, and a yoke. Both trusses have dorsals and support chamfered purlins, with the north side featuring an up-windbrace to the west truss and a vacant mortice for a former downbrace.
The heads of former wall-posts are attached to the north side of both trusses, and the wall-plate between them shows mortices and peg-holes for former intermediate posts, indicating that the wall was originally timber-framed. The two-bay west end has a 17th-century principal-rafter roof truss and chamfered purlins, while the east end features a 19th-century truss and purlins. This barn forms a group with Felton's Farmhouse, located approximately 20 metres to the south.
