Description

Stannanaught Farmhouse, now a house, dates to 1714 and has been altered since. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a graduated stone slate roof. The building is arranged in an L-shape, comprising a single-depth, three-unit baffle-entry main range, with a recessed crosswing to the right and an added outshut in the angle. The farmhouse has two storeys and three windows. A doorway is situated to the left of the centre bay, featuring a thin lintel, a set-in wooden doorcase, and a board door. Above the door is a moulded datestone inscribed with "1714 / R.S.S." The ground floor windows are wooden cross-window sliding sashes, while the first floor windows are small-paned 2-light sliding sashes, except for the centre window which has been altered. A cross-window is located to the staircase between the second and third bays. A chimney rises along the ridge in line with the door. The rear of the building features several similar sliding sashed windows. The interior, documented in a private survey from 1987, contains a baffle entry with a timber spere leading to the house part, and traces of a former firewindow in the former rear wall, though no surviving inglenook bressumer remains. A parlour is located at the rear of the wing, with a fireplace, and there is another fireplace in the chamber above. The staircase is a good example of contemporary design, featuring a closed string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The building was constructed for Robert Stannanought (died 1729) and represents a late example of a fundamentally 17th-century plan, likely the latest in the area.
