Description
Ashurst's Beacon is a beacon tower built in 1798 from sandstone rubble. It has a square plan and rests on a square base, with the upper part stepping back to support a pyramidal spire. There are blocked windows with stone surrounds and keyed lintels on three sides, and a similar blocked doorway is located on the south side. It is said to have been constructed as a watch tower to warn of a potential French invasion. This information can be found in E. Baines' "The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster," revised edition, 1870, volume II, page 187.
