Description

DALTON STONE HALL LANE SD 50 NW 10/45 Stone Hall 22-4-1967 II*

House. Early C18. Sandstone rubble with concrete tile roof. A symmetrical composition of storeys with attic and with one bay to each side of centre. Facade has plinth and moulded cornice. The outer bays are framed by chamfered quoins treated as pilasters and have a storey band and rebated and chamfered cross windows. Within the central pediment is an oval attic window with keyed stone surround. The doorway is flanked by giant pilasters. The door has a bolection moulded stone surround and a swan-necked pediment on brackets. On the 1st floor is a blind recess with stone surround. Chimneys behind ridge to left and right of centre. Interior: ground-floor rooms have chamfered axial beams, some with cyma stops. Between the hall and the right-hand (east) room are double doors with bolection moulded panels. The dog-leg stair has a closed string, square newels with sunk panels which have shouldered round heads, and a moulded handrail. It now has stick balusters of C19 type.
