Description

Knights Hall is a farmhouse, now a house, dating to 1716, although incorporating fabric from an earlier building and remodelled again in the later 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone, with rock-faced sandstone for the wings, and has a roof of interlocking concrete tiles.

The building has an irregular plan, consisting of a main range of one-and-a-half depths, a set-back single-depth wing to the south (left) and a set-back double-depth wing to the right. It is two storeys high with a 2:3:2 window arrangement. The main range features a chamfered plinth and a broad band over each floor. A doorway is positioned on the left, with a chamfered surround and a keystone, above which is a square moulded datestone lettered ‘1716/ EK/ PK’. The ground floor windows are top-hung casements imitating four-pane sashes, while the first floor has three four-pane sashes. All windows are set in openings with keystoned lintels; the ground-floor windows have lowered sills from the 19th century. The wing to the left has four-pane sashes, and the wing to the right has sixteen-pane unhorned sashes, all with wedge lintels. Gable chimneys and a ridge chimney are present at the junction of the second and third bays of the main range.

At the rear, the north portion of the main range has five-light chamfered mullion windows on each floor. A square stair-window is located centrally, both featuring floating wedge-shaped bands above, the ground floor window running out over the doorway. There is continuous masonry to the main range and the south wing, except that the south wing lacks a plinth.

The interior includes a timber-framed partition wall separating the present main range and the south wing. The main room contains two moulded axial beams – one quarter-round and the other ovolo – and the room above has two crudely chamfered lateral beams. A Tudor-arched fireplace with a top-chamfered surround (now a copy) is also present.

Historical records suggest a former timber-framed building extended further south.
