Description

Cicely's Cottage is a small farmhouse, now a house, dating from the later 17th century, with alterations made since. It is constructed of coursed thin sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular two-bay end-baffle-entry plan, with the second bay cross-gabled like a wing. It has two very low storeys and two windows, with a doorway on the left end and a two-light casement window to the right. There is another window above, offset to the left, with a ragged break in the masonry between the bays at the first floor. The second bay, which is gabled, has a two-light casement window at the first floor only. Gable chimneys are located to the left and at the right-hand corner. The right-hand return wall features a casement window to the front bay and a three-light mullioned window to the rear bay, which is now protected with external glazing, both with simple hoodmoulds. The rear elevation has mullioned windows of two and four lights at ground floor, to the former dairy and housepart respectively, and a mullioned four-light window above (lacking one mullion), all with simple hoodmoulds. Internally, the housepart retains the heck of a former inglenook, and an 18th-century stone fireplace. The partition between the bays is timber-framed. The former parlour has a cross-corner fireplace, and the former partition between this room and the dairy has been removed. Historically, the cottage is a rare example of a late 17th-century farmhouse on a very small scale, featuring a heated parlour, and is similar to Heyes Farmhouse in Grimshaw Road in its cross-gabled bay to a rectangular two-unit plan.
