Description
Smith's Farmhouse, now a house, likely originated in the late 17th century, with possible incorporation of earlier features. It was constructed in two phases and has been enlarged, altered, and recently renovated, with 20th-century additions. The building is built of sandstone rubble, both coursed and random, with a composition tile roof. Originally a T-plan, it comprises a main range and a cross-wing, with later 20th-century additions to the north. The main range, running east-west, is probably on the site of an earlier, narrower structure. It has two low storeys and a 1:1 window arrangement on its south side. The wing, at the east end, has a high plinth and includes a 20th-century three-light casement window on each floor of the south gable. The return side of the wing features a 4-light mullioned window on each floor of the front bay and 3-light casements to the rear bay, all with simple hood moulds. The main range has no chimney, whereas the wing has a corner chimney. Inside the wing are features typical of a subordinate range, including a beam from a former lateral partition separating a small service room from a parlour, and a cross-corner fireplace in the parlour. Two large chamfered lateral beams with run-out stops are also present. Windows have cambered wooden lintels with similar decoration, and the junction wall between the ranges has two similar lintels. On the first floor, the junction wall shows two blocked mullioned windows near the outer corners, and remnants of a roof truss with an unusual plank and stud infilling, suggesting the wing was added to a formerly narrower hall range. The main range includes a timber-framed longitudinal partition with a blocked Tudor-arched doorway. The farmhouse forms a group with the nearby barn, approximately 15 metres to the north-east.
