Description
The Old Toby Public House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a public house. It dates back to 1712, as indicated by a datestone on the first floor of the rear, and features a large addition from the late 19th century, which has undergone significant alterations. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone, with the older section displaying quoins and composition tile roofs.
The original part of the structure, which faces south, is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, consisting of three openings on each floor. It features a chamfered plinth and 19th-century window openings with 20th-century glazing. There is a plain doorway located in the re-entrant of the right-hand wing.
The later 19th-century addition, which faces north, is designed in a Gothic style and is also two storeys tall, with three windows arranged symmetrically. This section has a set-back center flanked by steeply gabled wings, and includes a gabled porch at the center with a two-centred arched doorway and gable coping with kneelers. The wings feature canted bay windows and cross-windows above, all fitted with margin panes, and there are chimneys on the side walls.
Inside, the building has been completely remodelled, with partition walls removed at the ground floor, leaving only two chamfered beams in the center of the older portion. The associated detached former farm buildings are not included in this listing.
