Description
Barker's Farmhouse, now a house, dates to 1742 and was enlarged in the 19th century. It has undergone alterations and renovations since. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a graduated stone slate roof. It has a cruciform plan, comprising a two-unit main range, a broad front porch-wing, a rear service wing, and an outshut attached to the rear wing. The farmhouse is two storeys tall with a 1:1:1 window arrangement. The large two-storey porch features a ball finial and a doorway with a rectangular lintel and a 20th-century glazed door. Above the door is a datestone with a circular panel inscribed with "H/E E/1742". The porch also has a tall two-light casement window. The flanking bays of the main range have large square two-light casement windows with rectangular lintels and 20th-century joinery. The roof incorporates a cruciform chimney stack along the centre of the ridge and ball finials on both gables. The west side of the rear wing has an outshut under a catslide roof. Inside, the farmhouse features an unusual two-unit plan, with a central chimney stack that originally contained relatively small back-to-back fireplaces. A stone-vaulted former dairy is located in the outshut of the rear wing. A 19th-century staircase runs along the rear wall of the second unit. The main range contains crudely-shaped stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, while the rear wing has machine-sawn purlins.
