Description
WRIGHTINGTON CHURCH LANE (off) SD 51 SW 5/94 Barn approx. 10 metres south-west of North Tunley Farmhouse - GV II
Barn. Probably C17 with earlier remains, altered early C19. Sandstone rubble with remains of timber frame and some brick infill. Roofs of slate and stone slate. East wall has exposed wallpost, middle rail and straight brace to left of wide doors. Left-hand part of wall covered by lean-to addition. To the right is a similar addition, and a range projecting forwards at right-angles. This has external stone steps to a doorway in the gable. Interior: at the northern end of the main barn are 2 cruck trusses. The northern one is closed with wattle and daub panels and the blades terminate at a collar, suggesting that the original roof was half- hipped. The 2nd truss has ogee blades joined by a collar and by a yoke. The eastern wallpost and part of the wallplate are exposed, linked to the cruck blade by a spur. The 3 other trusses have tie-beams and raking struts. The 2 southern trusses have exposed jowled wallposts, linked to the tie-beams by short straight braces. This framing is probably C17.
