Description

This building is a barn located approximately 10 metres south-west of North Tunley Farmhouse. It is likely from the 17th century, with some earlier elements, and underwent alterations in the early 19th century. The structure is made of sandstone rubble, featuring remnants of a timber frame and some brick infill, with roofs covered in slate and stone slate.

The east wall displays an exposed wallpost, middle rail, and a straight brace to the left of the wide doors. The left side of the wall has a lean-to addition, while a similar addition is on the right, along with a range that projects forward at right angles. This range includes external stone steps leading to a doorway in the gable.

Inside, at the northern end of the main barn, there are two cruck trusses. The northern truss is closed with wattle and daub panels, and its blades terminate at a collar, indicating that the original roof was half-hipped. The second truss features ogee blades connected by a collar and a yoke. The eastern wallpost and part of the wallplate are exposed, linked to the cruck blade by a spur. The other three trusses have tie-beams and raking struts, with the two southern trusses showing exposed jowled wallposts connected to the tie-beams by short straight braces. This framing is likely from the 17th century.
