Description
The Cruck Barn at Tatton Old Hall is a 16th-century barn that features a timber frame with brick infill and a thatched roof. It has an undivided hall plan. The southeast front has a stone base and consists of 20 by 3 cells of small framing with brick infill, including rectangular breathers and four square holes arranged in cross patterns. There are double doors in the 7th and 8th bays and a single door in the 20th bay from the right, all of which were added in the 20th century during its re-erection. The roof is made of Norfolk reed thatch with sedge at the ridge.
The northwest facade also has 20 by 3 cells of small framing and features a single door in the 14th bay from the right. The southwest gable end is made of plain brick, similar to the northeast gable, which includes a square pitch hole and a door. Inside, there are three base cruck trusses supported on stone footings, each featuring low cambered ties (which are a later addition), a collar, and a yoke. Spurs run from the crucks to the wall below the level of the wall plate. The cruck at the southwestern gable end has broken blades at the top, with inserted angle braces and queen posts. Wind bracing is also present. The framing suggests that a half-hip may have existed at the west end. During reconstruction, the ground cill and wall plate were replaced with new timber, and some of the timbers on the southeast front, along with most of the timber from the demolished barn at Tollemache Farm, Clotton Hoofield, were incorporated.
