Description
The Orangery, built in 1818 by Lewis Wyatt, is located in Tatton Park and is constructed from red sandstone with a glass roof. The building has a cross plan and features a south-east front with seven bays, including angled bays at either end that follow a half 2.3.2. half rhythm. The central three bays project outward by the width of one bay. It has a stone plinth and monolithic pilasters with unmoulded base blocks and cyma reversa capitals. Above the pilasters is a full entablature with sunken panels. The windows consist of four lights each, with double doorways at the center of each. Originally, the plate glass windows had smaller panes, similar to the upper halves of the windows, with each light containing two sets of four panes. The rear facade does not have any windows. The original glazed roof was likely replaced in the late 19th century and is now supported internally by slender iron pillars along with 20th-century tubular arched supports.
