Description
The Temple in Broad Walk is a garden ornament built around 1820 by William Cole. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a circular temple set on a square stepped base, inspired by the Choragic monument to Lysicrates, though it lacks the inner drum behind the colonnade. The structure has a square platform with three steps of decreasing height, topped by two courses of horizontally rusticated stonework and a ledge. Above this, a circular plinth supports six Corinthian columns, with a full entablature above, although it does not have the decorated frieze typical of the Greek original. The roof edge features antefixae, and there is floral ornamentation at the apex. The monument currently lacks its original wider square platform, which previously included a flight of steps on each side and balustrades.
