Description
Kathry is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th century. It has been altered and slightly enlarged over time. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a slate roof and features a brick chimney. Originally, it was L-shaped, consisting of a two-unit end-baffle-entry main range and a one-unit rear wing, with an added outshut in the rear angle.
The house is two storeys high and has two windows on the front. There is patched masonry at the left end of the ground floor, indicating the position of a former doorway, which aligned with the gable chimney. Each floor has two three-light casement windows, all with raised sills and rectangular lintels. A cast-iron gutter with the raised letter "D" (indicating the Derby estate) runs along the building at regular intervals. The chimney is located at the left gable.
On the right-hand gable wall, there are two-light windows on each floor, both featuring simple hoodmoulds, with the upper window having a stone mullion. A 20th-century wooden porch is situated at the junction with the rear wing.
Inside, there is a timber-framed partition between the bays, now concealed. Both main rooms have quarter-round moulded lateral beams. The former inglenook in the first bay has been removed, and the bressummer has been replaced with a continuous lateral beam, although the former firewindow remains as a small rectangular recess in the rear wall. The former cross-corner parlour fireplace in the second bay is now blocked, and the chimney has been removed. A former mullioned window on the first floor of the wing is also blocked and covered by the added outshut on that side. The principal-rafter roof trusses between the bays and at the junction with the wing indicate that the roofs were once more steeply pitched.
