Description
NEWBURGH
SD41SE BACK LANE 663-1/3/98 (North side) Kathry
II
Farmhouse, now house. Later C17; altered and slightly enlarged. Coursed sandstone rubble, slate roof, brick chimney. Formerly L-plan formed by a 2-unit end-baffle-entry main range with a one-unit rear wing to the 2nd, and now with added outshut in the rear angle. Two storeys and 2 windows, with patched masonry at the left end of the ground floor indicating the position of a former doorway (in line with the gable chimney); two 3-light casements on each floor, all with raised sills and rectangular lintels. Cast-iron gutter with raised letter "D" (Derby estate) at regular intervals. Chimney at left gable. The right-hand gable wall has one 2-light window on each floor, both with simple hoodmoulds and the upper with a stone mullion; and a C20 wooden porch at the junction with the rear wing. INTERIOR: timber-framed partition between bays now concealed; quarter-round moulded lateral beams in both main rooms; former inglenook in 1st bay removed and bressummer replaced with continuous lateral beam, but former firewindow survives as small rectangular recess in rear wall; former cross-corner parlour fireplace in 2nd bay now blocked (and chimney removed); former mullioned window at 1st floor of wing now blocked and covered by added outshut on that side; principal-rafter roof trusses between bays and at junction with wing, indicating formerly more steeply-pitched roofs.
