Description

Giant's Hall is a late 18th or very early 19th century farmhouse, now divided into two dwellings, situated on Culvert Lane in Newburgh. The building has a rectangular, double-depth plan and a symmetrical, though disproportionately long, facade. It is constructed primarily of coursed squared sandstone, with the rear and right-hand end of pebble-dashed brick. The roof is hipped and slate-covered. The front facade features rusticated quoins and a moulded gutter cornice. The ground floor has glazed and panelled double doors, now sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch. Both floors have 16-pane sashed windows with wedge lintels featuring raised pseudo voussoirs and keystones. The left return wall has matching windows, while the right-hand return wall incorporates an inserted doorway. The rear wall includes a full-height semi-elliptical blank arch, seemingly intended for a former waggon entrance and containing a datestone lettered "R P I R I 1679". Inside, a dog-legged open-string staircase is present, with scrolled brackets and stick balusters.
