Description
The war memorial in Newburgh is an obelisk dating from the early 20th century, with the designer or sculptor unknown. It is made of sandstone, with the lowest step constructed from concrete flagstones.
The memorial features a three-stepped base, with the bottom step of concrete flagstones, while the upper sections are made of sandstone. Atop the base is a plinth supporting a stepped and tapered obelisk that stands 2.5 meters high. The obelisk is adorned with carved inscriptions and laurel wreaths in relief on all four sides. The south face bears the inscription: "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY / OF THE / MEN OF NEWBURGH / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WARS / 1914 - 1918 / 1939 - 1945." The west face reads: "SONS OF THIS PLACE / LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID / THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE / WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD, / THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES / THAT YOU WHO LIVE MAY / REAP A RICHER HARVEST / ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP." The north face states: "THEIR NAME / LIVETH / FOR / EVERMORE." The east face is inscribed with "1914 - 1918," listing the names of ten individuals who fell in the First World War, while the plinth below notes "1939 - 1945," with the names of four who died in the Second World War.
This memorial is significant for its thoughtful design and historical importance, commemorating the sacrifices made in both World Wars.
